    How to Fix Your React App's AI Visibility in 30 Minutes - Visual representation

    The 30-Second Diagnosis

    I'll never forget the moment I ran curl on our React site and saw basically nothing. Just an empty div. Ouch.

    Want to check if you're affected? Run this:

    curl -A "GPTBot/1.0" https://yoursite.com

    If you see mostly empty divs and script tags, your React app is invisible to AI search engines. Time to fix it.

    The 30-Minute Fix: react-snap

    We're using react-snap—a tool that pre-renders your React app to static HTML at build time.

    Total time: 30 minutes
    Cost: $0
    Difficulty: Easy
    Result: AI can finally see your content

    This is the fastest way to fix AI visibility without rebuilding your entire app.

    Step 1: Install react-snap (5 minutes)

    Add it as a dev dependency:

    npm install --save-dev react-snap

    That's it. The package is installed.

    Step 2: Configure Your Routes (10 minutes)

    Create a file called react-snap.config.js in your project root. List all the routes you want pre-rendered:

    module.exports = {
      include: [
        "/",
        "/about",
        "/products",
        "/contact"
      ],
      skipThirdPartyRequests: true
    };

    Replace those routes with your actual page paths. If you have dynamic routes, list each variation explicitly (like /blog/post-1, /blog/post-2, etc.).

    Step 3: Add Render Signals (10 minutes)

    react-snap needs to know when your page is ready to snapshot. Add this to your page components:

    useEffect(() => {
      if (navigator.userAgent === 'ReactSnap') {
        document.dispatchEvent(new Event('render-event'));
      }
    }, []);

    This tells react-snap "okay, page is loaded, take the snapshot now."

    Step 4: Update package.json

    Add a postbuild script that runs react-snap after building:

    {
      "scripts": {
        "build": "react-scripts build",
        "postbuild": "react-snap"
      }
    }

    Now every build automatically pre-renders your pages.

    Step 5: Build and Verify (5 minutes)

    Run your build:

    npm run build

    Check the output in your build folder. Open the HTML files. You should see actual content instead of empty divs.

    Then test with curl again:

    curl -A "GPTBot/1.0" http://localhost:8000

    (Use your local server or deployed URL)

    If you see real content, it worked.

    Common Issues and Fixes

    "Navigation failed" errors
    Make sure all routes in your config actually exist in your app.

    Dynamic routes not working
    List each dynamic route variation explicitly. react-snap can't guess URL patterns.

    Third-party scripts causing problems
    Set skipThirdPartyRequests: true in your config to ignore external scripts during pre-rendering.

    Hydration warnings in console
    Usually harmless. react-snap creates static HTML, then React hydrates it. Minor mismatches are normal.

    Before & After Comparison

    Before (CSR only):

    <div id="root"></div>
    <script src="/static/js/main.js"></script>

    After (pre-rendered):

    <div id="root">
      <h1>Your Actual Heading</h1>
      <p>Your actual content that AI can now see...</p>
      <!-- Full content here -->
    </div>
    <script src="/static/js/main.js"></script>

    That difference is everything for AI visibility.

    When react-snap Isn't Enough

    Frequent Content Updates

    If your content changes hourly, react-snap requires a rebuild every time. Consider Next.js with Incremental Static Regeneration instead.

    User-Specific Content

    Use a hybrid approach. Pre-render the shell and shared content, then load personalized data client-side after hydration.

    Large Sites (1000+ pages)

    For sites with thousands of pages, build times get slow. Consider Prerender.io (paid service) or migrating to Next.js with on-demand ISR.

    Alternative: Prerender.io

    Can't modify your code? Need it working in 15 minutes?

    Sign up for Prerender.io, add their middleware to your server, configure bot detection. It works immediately by rendering JavaScript for bots on-demand.

    Cost: $49-199/month
    Setup: 15 minutes
    Best for: Can't touch code or need emergency fix

    Expected Results

    After implementing react-snap properly:

    AI Crawler Accessibility: 0/100 → 85-95/100
    Overall GEO Score: +40 to +60 points
    Time to improvement: 24-48 hours (after bots re-crawl)

    Deployment Checklist

    Before you celebrate:

    ✅ Built without errors
    ✅ HTML files contain actual content (check manually)
    ✅ curl test shows full content (not empty divs)
    ✅ Deployed to production
    ✅ Waited 24-48 hours for AI bots to re-crawl
    ✅ Ran new GEO assessment to confirm improvement

    Don't skip the verification step. It's easy to think it's working when it's not.

    What to Do After the Fix

    You just made your content visible. Now optimize what AI sees:

    Add structured data. Use schema markup to help AI understand your content better.

    Improve content clarity. Write in natural language that answers specific questions.

    Monitor AI citations. Check if ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity are now recommending your business.

    Expand coverage. Pre-render more pages, especially high-value product or service pages.

    Plan long-term migration. If you're rebuilding anyway, consider moving to Next.js for better built-in SSR support.
